USA : Une université obligée de payer près d’un million de dollars à un professeur d’origine palestinienne

La censure peut coûter très cher aux Etats-Unis, même quand elle s’en prend aux défenseurs de la cause palestinienne. Steve Salaita vient d’obliger l’université de l’Illinois à lui payer 875.000 dollars de dommages et intérêts pour discrimination.


Les tribunaux américains, saisis par le Professeur Steven Salaita, chercheur américain d’origine palestinienne, ont contraint l’Université de l’Illinois à lui verser la somme de 875.000 dollars, soit l’équivalent de 10 ans de salaire, pour avoir renoncé à l’embaucher, en raison de ses critiques d’Israël sur les réseaux sociaux.

Les juges ont estimé que les droits politiques de cet universitaire, de même que sa liberté d’expression avaient été bafoués, au regard du premier amendement de la constitution étatsunienne.

Il avait été sélectionné, après un entretien d’embauche, pour enseigner au sein de l’Université, mais celle-ci a changé d’avis, face aux pressions du lobby israélien qui a fait valoir qu’il avait fait circuler sur twitter des messages d’ indignation concernant les massacres israéliens sur la bande de Gaza à l’été 2014.

Steven Salaita a reçu un énorme soutien de la part de la communauté académique, et 80 universitaires viennent de publier un texte déclarant que ce dédommagement, ne s’accompagnant pas d’une embauche, ils maintiennent leur appel à boycotter cette université, "qui a privé les étudiants et les enseignants d’un chercheur dynamique" et qui a "violé les droits fondamentaux de la libre expression."
