1992

An “education in tolerance”

Israel widely spread the idea that Palestinians spent their time filling their children’s minds with antisemitic hatred, and that Palestinian schoolbooks called for “Jews to be thrown into the sea”. This theme was even used during the Oslo “peace process”, while the Palestinian Authority was producing new school textbooks describing the prospect of neighbouring Israeli and Palestinian states. But the Israelis complained that these textbooks were antisemitic, because “they express disdain for the colonies and for Israeli occupation” (sic!), and they called on UNESCO and the World Bank to stop subsidising the publishing of these books.

What unbelievable nerve, once again, in reversing the roles and accusing the other, while constantly falsifying history and inculcating their own children with the most shameful racism.

Not only do Israeli school history books make absolutely no mention of Palestine, or of the “Green Line” separating the territory on which Israel was created in 1948-49 from the Palestinian territoires it has occupied since 1967, but the whole education of Israeli children is made to incite hatred, scorn and fear of Arabs.

Starting with the exploitation of some of the horrors contained in the Bible, highlighted in the very heart of the current Israeli educational system, and not only in its officially religious sector. Here are some excerpts: “But of the cities of these people, which the LORD thy God doth give thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth: But thou shalt utterly destroy them” (Deuteronomy, chapter 20, verses 16-17); “Now therefore kill every male among the little ones…” (commandments of Moses, Numbers, chapter 31, verses 13-18).

Xenophobia also raises its ugly head in children’s literature. In 1992, Adir Cohen, professor of educational sciences at the University of Haïfa, published a survey of 1,700 tales for children aged 9 to 12, produced over a period of 20 years, more than a third of which involved Arab characters (“National Stereotypes in Hebrew Children’s Literature”). He discovered that the figure of the “Arab” is “bizarre”, “small”, “angry”, “not from our country”, “bad”, “drinks”, “has a threatening face”, “has a scar”, “is dirty”.

For 75 % of the children interviewed by this academic, the Arab is a “child kidnapper”, a “murderer”, a “terrorist”. “90% of the questionnaires express a clear negation of the Palestinians right to their land, total rejection of peaceful coexistence and collaboration between Jews and Arabs, the children explaining that ‘the Palestinians want to kill us… drive us out… invade our towns… throw us into the sea.”
