A day before the appeal, Arab Monitor expresses its worries about the « Rabaa Room “ Journalists
London 2-12-2015

Many in the media today are anticipating, with deep concern, the pending verdict by the appeal court with regards to what has become known as the “Rabaa Room” case. The case involves 16 journalists who had initially been sentenced to life imprisonment, including Waleed Shalaby who is sentenced to death, with the decision expected tomorrow, December the 3rd.

Arab monitor has no doubt that this case, much like many in today’s Egypt, is one that is deeply motivated by the regime’s political agenda. This is an example of injustice issued against those who only wished to do their jobs freely, opposing the brutal and constant military interference in Egypt’s political life. These verdicts are nothing more than fear tactics being used by the coup regime, to attempt to silence the many journalists who have continued to portray the harsh truth reality of today’s Egypt. They want these journalists to voluntarily abandon their rights, for the sake of their own survival and safety, as well as that of their families’.

While the Egyptian government continues to insist that no journalists are imprisoned, the magnitude of oppression practiced against journalists in Egypt has reached new levels. Any claim made by the coup regime is absolutely false, as documentation so show that over 100 journalists are currently held behind bars, 11 of them being from the aforementioned case, other than the 5 who the authorities were unable to apprehend.

The Arab monitor urges and hopes that these journalists will be immediately released, especially given the fact that many need urgent medical treatment, some even surgeries, which the prison administration continues to disallow. This is despite the fact that the prisoners have offered to incur the expenses themselves.

The list of the accused journalists in the case are as follows:

10. Hany Salah El Din – Chief Editor at Al Youm El Saba’
11. Amr Farrag – Rasd Network Manager (not caught)

10. Gamal Nassar – Writer Al Mokhtar Islamic Magazine (not caught)
11. Abdullah al fakharany – Rasd Network

14 Waleed Abdel Raaouf Shalaby Freedom and Justice Journal
15 Ahmed Abd El Hafez – Documentary Movie Producer (not caught)

As well as the promotion of false scenes and photos that give the impression of injuries and fatalities amongst the demonstrators during the dispersal of the Rabaa sit in.

They are also accused of the widespread of false news, rumors and photos that provoke internal and external public opinion concerning the country’s condition. Moreover, among the charges, were the use of electronic web sites to communicate and promote incitement against the nation’s organizations, military and police.
