Iyad Sabbah est cet artiste de Gaza, dont les sculptures exprimant la dévastation et la souffrance après les attaques israéliennes, ont fait le tout du monde. Pourtant Iyad Sabbah lui-même est actuellement à la recherche d’un pays d’accueil, et de la possibilité d’exposer ses oeuvres d’art.
En octobre 2014, Iyad Sabbah rend hommage de manière bouleversante au peuple de Gaza en disposant des statues d’argile dans le faubourg côtier, dévasté, vidé, de Shijaiya. Elles représentent des familles fuyant le feu, exténuées. Les visages sont inexpressifs, les corps tachetés de rouge. Les rescapés des massacres n’ont pas de dos mais un trou, exprimant que les gens font le maximum pour paraître forts mais sont cassés à l’intérieur par le blocus et la souffrance.
« J’ai également installé des sculptures sur une plage non loin, pour parler des souffrances des civils qui tentent de fuir les zones de conflits en prenant la mer et qui, parfois, finissent noyés » .
« J’ai fabriqué ces mannequins avec des matériaux de récupération car je ne peux pas me procurer certains produits à cause du blocus », explique-t-il lors d’une brève rencontre à Paris, la semaine dernière. De la fibre de verre récupérée dans les ruines, de l’argile rouge et des sacs vides.
Je suis sculpteur sur bronze mais je ne peux pas me procurer cette matière, ni faire venir des moulures et certaines pâtes dont les sculpteurs se servent dans leur travail quotidien.
Né à Gaza en 1973, Iyad Sabbah a fait ses études de Beaux Arts à l’université de Tripoli en Libye et a obtenu une maîtrise en sculpture à l’ Université de Hélouanau Cairo. Il enseignait les Beaux-Arts à l’Université Al-Aqsa de Gaza, tout en travaillant dans le domaine de l’art contemporain depuis plus de 15 ans.
S’il a pu exposer localement et internationalement par le passé, il est aujourd’hui totalement bloqué et se trouve dans un « No man’s land ».
Il a dû retirer ses sculptures des rues et de la plage de Gaza car le gouvernement ne permet pas la représentation d’êtres humains de manière réaliste, et estimait en outre que la détresse que montrent ces silhouettes d’argiles, avait un effet démoralisant sur la population.
Profitant d’une bourse d’études accordée par la Tunisie, il a réussi à s’y rendre, mais son visa de 6 mois a expiré et il a dû en partir.
Accueilli le temps d’une exposition qui vient de se terminer ces jours-ci à la Mairie de Bruxelles, il est aujourd’hui désespérément à la recherche d’un point de chute.
Qui est prêt à exposer Iyad Sabbah ?
Il n’est pas un « ambassadeur d’Israël » chargé de blanchir les crimes d’un régime d’apartheid colonial, comme la troupe de danse Batsheva, invitée par l’Opéra de Paris.

Iyad Sabbah’s sculptures pay homage to not only those who lost their lives during the war but also those who were forced to flee their homes. Among the rubble in the Shejaiya district, an area that witnessed the extremity of the war.
They were also placed on a beach to symbolise the refugees fleeing to other countries illegally in a desperate attempt to escape the conflict.
He made them out of waste materials found in bombsites, mainly fibre-glass, and covered them with clay, because of the material shortage due to the Gaza siege. “I wanted to portray what was missing,” he said. Sabbah holds that the people who survived the events of the past months were left traumatised by the war and “carried the scars of the war” with them.
Broken, crumbling and splattered with “blood”, these haunting sculptures have been in October 2014, after the 50-day Israeli war against the Gaza pouplation which killed more than 2,200 people and razed thousands of homes in the narrow strip to the ground.
Most of the casualties were civilians, including hundreds of children, according to the UN, reflected in artist Iyad Sabbah’s depiction of a family.
Born in Gaza in 1973. Sabbah has a Bachelors degree in Fine Arts from the University of Tarablus, Libya and a Masters degree in Sculpture from the University of Hilwan in Cairo. Sabbah teaches in the Fine Arts Department at Al-Aqsa University. He is a member of the Fine Artists Association and the General Union of Artists. Sabbah has practiced and worked in contemporary arts for more than 15 years and has participated in many local and international solo and group exhibitions. His work is well known for its simplicity in symbolizing reality and mixing sculpture with painting.
In the past, Sabbah was able to exhibit locally and internationally, but now he can’t any longuer. He is blocked in a no man’s land.
He had to withdraw his sculptures from the Gaza streets and beach because the government
expressed its concern over the statues on religious grounds, terming them ‘haram’, and also because showing such a distress and weakness had a demoralyzing effect on the Gaza population.
He could travel to Tunisia recently where he got a grant to study for a couple of months but his 6 months visa has expired and he had to leave.
He was then invited to exhibit his work by the Brussels (Belgium) Toown Council, but this has just ended and he has no place to go now.
Who wants to welcome an Iyad Sabbah’s exhibition ?
He his not an « Ambassador for Israel », in charge of whitewhasing the crimes of an Apartheid and colonial state. So he has less chances to be invited in France than Batsheva the Israeli danse company financed by Israel and invited to perform by the Paris Opera at the beginning of January!
