On peut dire que Sharon a fait durer le plaisir ! En bon metteur en scène, il a su entretenir pendant plus d’un an le suspense « désengagera/désengagera pas » à renforts de projecteurs sur les colons déchaînés ou en pleurs, et sur son « courage » de « grand homme de paix ».
Ce n’est qu’à l’été 2005, que 7000 colons, qui occupaient un tiers des meilleures terres de la bande de Gaza, (laissant généreusement les deux tiers restants à 1,5 million de Gazans), escortés d’autant de soldats israéliens ayant tout rasé aux alentours pour des raisons de « sécurité »… firent leurs valises… pour aller grossir les colonies en Cisjordanie !
Gaza libre ? Il ne faut pas rêver ! En « partant », Israël verrouillait tout autour de la bande de Gaza :
– contrôle total des mers, du ciel et de tous les points d’accès avec le reste du monde
– aucune circulation entre la bande de Gaza et la Cisjordanie, contrairement aux promesses
– Permis de voyager à l’étranger accordés au compte-goutte par Israël et impossibilité quasi absolue pour les étrangers d’entrer dans la Bande de Gaza
– interdiction de reconstruire l’aéroport international de Gaza, ouvert en 1998 par Arafat et Clinton, détruit en 2000 par l’armée israélienne, soit plus de 8 milliards de dollars de dégâts
– interdiction de poursuivre la construction du port, stoppée par Israël en octobre 2000
Quelques mois plus tard, la 9 janvier 2006, la victoire du Hamas à l’issue d’élections démocratiques allait donner un nouveau prétexte à Israël pour cadenasser la bande de Gaza. Et un an après le fameux « désengagement », l’armée israélienne bombardait la population de Gaza, faisant des dizaines de morts parmi les civils, détruisant de multiples infrastructures vitales, et kidnappant des centaines de Palestiniens, dont 8 ministres et 45 députés palestiniens.

The “disengagement” of the Gaza Strip
Sharon certainly made the pleasure last! For more than a year, he stage-managed the suspense over whether or not the settlers would be removed, playing the media spotlight on angry or tearful settlers, and on his “courage” as a “great man of peace”.
It was only in 2005 that the 7,000 settlers, who had occupied one-third of the best lands in the Gaza Strip, (generously leaving the remaining two-thirds for the 1.5 million Gazans), escorted by the same number of Israeli soldiers and having razed everything to the ground, packed their bags… to swell the numbers in the colonies of the West Bank!
Free Gaza? Don’t count on it! When it left, Israel completely locked in the Gaza Strip:
– total control of all points of access to the rest of the world, by land, sea or air;
– no movement between the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, contrary to the promises made;
– authorisations to travel abroad granted parsimoniously by Israel, and almost complete impossibility for foreigners to enter the Gaza Strip;
– prohibition to rebuild the international airport of Gaza, opened in 1998 by Arafat and Clinton, destroyed in 2000 by the Israeli army, causing 8 billion dollars of damage;
– prohibition from continuing the construction of the port, stopped by Israel in October 2000.
A few months later, on 9 January 2006, Hamas’ victory in democratic elections gave Israel a new pretext for severing all contact between the Gaza Strip and the outside world.
And one year after the famous “disengagement”, the Israeli army bombed the population of Gaza, killing dozens of civilians and destroying many vital parts of the infrastructure, and kidnapped hundreds of Palestinians, including 8 ministers and 45 Palestinian MPs.
