Pendant que les troupes israéliennes sont entraînées sur deux bases militaires à viser les yeux et les genoux des enfants, en prenant soin « de ne pas donner aux Palestiniens le chiffre de morts dont ils ont besoin pour gagner l’appui international et soutenir leur combat pour l’indépendance », comme l’explique textuellement le lieutenant-colonel Yoram Lorando au Jerusalem Post (27 octobre 2000), le gouvernement israélien s’attaque à l’anéantissement de l’Autorité Palestinienne et de Yasser Arafat.
Un document émanant des services secrets à la demande d’Ehud Barak, daté du 15 octobre 2000 (donc bien avant le premier attentat palestinien ), et s’appuyant sur le plan « Champ d’épines » élaboré en 1996, c’est-à-dire pendant le processus d’Oslo (!) énonce que « la personne d’Arafat constitue une grave menace pour la sécurité de l’Etat et que les inconvénients éventuels de sa disparition sont moindres que les inconvénients liés à son existence » (repris par Ma’ariv le 6 juillet 2001).
Accusé d’orchestrer le soulèvement palestinien et de fomenter un complot pour « internationaliser le conflit, en faisant appel à la communauté internationale pour remplacer les Etats-Unis » (sic), celui qui a acquiescé aux demandes les plus exorbitantes des négociateurs israéliens, se voit accuser de tous les crimes. « Même son discours sur la pelouse de la Maison Blanche le 13 septembre 1993 contenait des indices montrant que pour lui la déclaration de principe ne signifiait pas la fin du conflit. A aucun moment, il n’a abandonné son uniforme, symbole de son statut de chef révolutionnaire » (« Livre Blanc » présenté le 20 novembre 2000 en conférence de presse par le gouvernement Barak.).
En mars 2001, sous Sharon, son élimination est ouvertement discutée. En juillet, il est prévu par le chef d’Etat-major Shaul Mofaz que l’assaut soit donné après un grand attentat suicide en Israël, servant de justification. (Foreign Report de Jane, 12 juillet 2001). Quand le 23 novembre, à la veille de la visite de Sharon aux Etats-Unis, les Israéliens assassinent un dirigeant du Hamas, Mahmoud Abou Hanoud, alors que depuis deux mois le Hamas respecte un engagement de ne pas commettre d’attentats, beaucoup d’observateurs retiennent leur souffle, d’autant que le 11 septembre 2001 vient de passer par là, ainsi que l’attaque foudroyante de l’Afghanistan par l’allié américain.
Le 16 décembre Arafat prononce à la télévision un discours dans lequel il condamne les attentats suicides, et sa police procède à une vague d’arrestations de militants du Hamas. Cela ne l’empêchera pas d’être bientôt bunkerisé à l’intérieur de la Muqata’a, et condamné à mourir de mort mystérieuse.

« The resistance has not been ended! Kill Arafat! »
A document emanating from the secret service at the request of Ehud Barak, dated October 15, 2000 (so well before the first Palestinian assassination attempt), and based on the « Field of Thorns » plan elaborated in 1996, that is during the Oslo Process (!), stated that « the person of Arafat constitutes a serious threat for the security of the State, and that the eventual inconveniences due to his disappearance would be less than those associated with his existence. » (Picked up by Ma’ariv July 16, 2001)
Accused of orchestrating the Palestinian uprising and of plotting to « internationalize the conflict by appealing to the international community to replace the United States » (sic), he who had acquiesced to the most exorbitant demands of Israeli negotiators saw himself accused of all sorts of crimes. « Even his September 13, 1993 discourse on the White House lawn contained no indications showing that for him the declaration of principle did not signify the end of the conflict. He never, at any moment, abandoned his uniform, symbol of his status as chief revolutionary. » (« White Book » presented by the Barak government at a November 20, 2000 press conference.)
At the same time as Israeli troops were being trained at two military bases to aim between the eyes and at the knees of infants, taking care « to not give to the Palestinians the casualty figures with which they could gain international support in their combat for independence, » as explained by lieutenant colonel Yoram Lorando in the October 27, 2000 Jerusalem Post, the Israeli government was working to annihilate the Palestinian Authority and Yasser Arafat.
In March 2001, under Sharon, his elimination is overtly discussed. In July, it is foreseen by the army chief of staff Shaul Mofaz that the attempt take place after a particularly heavy suicide bombing inside Israel, which would serve as justification. (Foreign Report de Jane, July 12, 2001) When Israelis assassinated Mahmoud Abou Hanoud, a leader of Hamas on November 23, on the eve of Sharon’s visit to the United States and after a two-month long Hamas engagement to not commit violent acts, many held their breaths, especially in the light of September 11 and the lightning attack on Afghanistan by the US.
On December 16 Arafat gave a televised speech in which he condemned the suicide attacks, and his police began a wave of arrests of Hamas militants. This did not prevent him from eventually being forced into a bunker in the interior of the Muqata’a, and to be condemned to a mysterious death.
