Dans la nuit du 14 au 15 octobre 1953, l’unité 101 de l’armée israélienne, nouvellement constituée sous la responsabilité d’un capitaine nommé Ariel Sharon, s’empare de Qibya, un village de Jordanie proche de la ligne de la frontière avec Israël.
C’est un nouveau massacre, délibéré, où 69 civils trouveront la mort, dans les décombres de leurs maisons dynamitées par Sharon et ses hommes.
Les dirigeants israéliens, après avoir commencé par nier, auront l’impudence de justifier le crime, présenté comme de « légitimes représailles » à l’assassinat, quelques jours plus tôt, de trois civils israéliens près de Tel-Aviv.
Le fait que les auteurs de cet attentat ne soient pas de Qibya, ou que l’armée jordanienne, toujours directement commandée par un Britannique, ait supplié les Israéliens de mener elle-même l’enquête, ne changera rien : l’Etat-Major a décidé que ce sont les habitants de Qibya qui subiraient le châtiment collectif, et consigne a été donnée à l’unité 101 de leur infliger « un maximum de dégâts en vies humaines et sur les biens ».
La tuerie, rapportée dans la presse internationale, est officiellement condamnée par une résolution du Conseil de Sécurité des Nations Unies, et provoque quelques réactions indignées à l’intérieur même d’Israël. Mais le Premier ministre David Ben Gourion convoque le jeune Sharon, alors âgé de 25 ans, pour le féliciter, et lui dire de ne pas se laisser impressionner par quelques intellectuels à l’âme trop sensible. Message reçu « cinq sur cinq » par le spadassin, et l’unité 101 se spécialisera donc, au cours des années suivantes, dans les attaques terroristes, à la plus grande satisfaction du chef de l’armée Moshe Dayan, qui dira que Sharon et ses hommes « ont redonné à Tsahal un tonus qui commençait à faiblir ».
De 1949 à 1956, près de 5.000 Palestiniens, dont l’immense majorité ne portaient pas d’armes, seront ainsi tués par l’armée israélienne.

« Kill as many of them as you can ! »
In 1953, on the night of 14th October until the morning of the 15th, unit 101 of the Israeli army, only recently under the direction of a captain named Ariel Sharon, seized Qibya, a Jordanian village near the border with Israel.
Yet another deliberate massacre was carried out, in which 69 civilians died under the rubble of their homes, dynamited by Sharon and his men.
After initially denying their involvement, Israeli leaders brazenly justified the crime, which they presented as « legitimate retaliation » for the murder of three Israeli civilians near Tel-Aviv several days earlier.
The fact that the perpetrators of the Tel-Aviv murders were not from Qibya and that the Jordanian army, still under direct British command, has implored the Israelis to allow it to conduct an investigation, was to have no effect. The Israeli military command had decided that the inhabitants of Qibya should be subjected to collective punishment, and Unit 101 had been instructed to inflict « maximum damage on both human life and property« .
The slaughter, reported in the international press, was officially condemned by a UN Security Council resolution and provoked several reactions of outrage even within Israel itself. However, Prime Minister David Ben Gurion summonsed the young Sharon, then 25 years old, to congratulate him and tell him to not be swayed by criticism from a few overly sensitive intellectuals.
The thugs got the message loud and clear, and during the subsequent years Unit 101 specialized in terrorist attacks, to the great satisfaction of army chief Moshe Dayan who told Sharon and his men that they had « given a tonic to the Tsahal which was starting to weaken ».
From 1949 to 1956, nearly 5,000 Palestinians, the immense majority of them unarmed, were thus to be killed by the Israeli army.
